INTRODUCTION When we examine a typical childhood we often associate phrases like: once upon a time in a land far, far away and the famous, and they lived happily ever after. However, these phrases when related to children’s movies and storylines have an impact on how children perceive the world. Names like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Belle, and Jasmin are all too familiar to little girls. These characters are often the response when girls are asked, â€Å"What do you want to be when you grow up†? When boys are asked a similar question, their responses are much more masculine, a fireman, policeman, or football player. This paper will focus on the Disney Princess movies and the role they play in shaping a young girls†¦show more content†¦3) Studies show girls as young as three years of age show preferences for skinny body types, and girls who are just entering kindergarten verbalize the idea of being fat. Girls this young may not understand th e underlying sexual implications of beauty but they do show an understanding that women need to be thin and beautiful in order to be happy. Exposure to Disney Princess movies and the way in which they represent women as thin and beautiful may contribute to a girls ideals of what it means to be female (Coyne et al., 2016, p. 4). Limited exposure to Disney films might not in and of itself affect a girl’s self-esteem but prolonged exposure to the Disney Princess phenomenon can have lasting effects on girls (Coyne et al., 2016, p 4). The Disney Princess industry is a $4 billion marketing empire (Hanes, 2011). This industry includes over 25,000 products and has attributed to the overwhelming influence on product consumerism and media directed towards children. This consumerism contributes to the â€Å"girlhood† that is identified by the female gender and girl’s consumption of the media messages and merchandise (England et al., 2011, p.555). While parents may find Disney Princess products a â€Å"safe† item for their children to engage in play with, other experts disagree and hypothesize that these products make girls vulnerable to undesirable outcomes.
